Funkometry was formed in Whitehorse in 2018. Its members bonded over their love of classic funk grooves, those that create an irresistible urge for foot taping, neck pulsating, and grunt generating.
Funkometry's musical repertoire consists of vintage funk tunes, jazz classics that went through a funkification process, and tributes to contemporary old-school funk bands. The band has more recently been focusing on original compositions, which will be released soon on this website.
Funkometry has played, among others, at Jazz in the Hall in 2019, in the 2019 and 2018 editions of the Sourdough Rendezvous (in 2018, under the name Groovement), and a variety of private events.
Funkometry's individual band members have collectively cumulated several decades worth of on-stage performance experience in a wide spectrum of musical styles.
Adam Cripps — Bass. This low-ender is no stranger to the Northern music scene and has a versatile playing style which makes him a go-to side musician. Performing for over 16 years in and around the Yukon, finding funk ferociously fun & flavourful, he found fellow funkers to form Funkometry.
Roger Gillies — Keyboard. Trained as a jazz pianist, Roger arrived in the Yukon 27 years ago and began playing with The Big Band. The connections he made with that group led to membership in various other bands and small combos in Whitehorse playing genres ranging from Afro-Cuban to Jazz to Funk.
Dan Halen — Guitar. As a complete contrast to the 80’s rocker Eddie Van Halen, the Dan Halen of Yukon is a ‘Renaissance Man’ in every sense of the word with regards to his musical pursuits. As a recording studio producer/musician, this classical guitarist, now turncoat “funkster,” has amassed a lifetime of flashy techniques he shares with his listeners.
Keith Todd — Trombone. Currently is music director of the Whitehorse All-City Bands and is an active freelance trombonist based in Whitehorse, Yukon and Nelson, B.C. Originally trained as an orchestral player, Keith is carving out his niche in the jazz and funk genres.
Michel Vallières — Drums. Since his arrival in the Yukon in 2013, Michel has adapted his skills as a trained orchestral percussionist to the drum set by submitting his useless feet to a thorough boot camp. He has been playing with The Big Band and various combos over the last 5 years.
